TRAFFIC: W. Superior to close 6 p.m. Thursday – 6 a.m. Monday for sewer project

W. Superior Avenue between W. 6 and W. 9 closed in both directions for road repairs

Cleveland (June 12, 2018) – Downtown Cleveland traffic will be impacted beginning Thursday, June 14, at 6 p.m. by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District’s Superior Stones Canal CSO Improvement Project.

Eastbound and westbound lanes of W. Superior Avenue between W. 6 and W. 9 Streets will be closed beginning Thursday, June 14, at 6 p.m.

Superior Avenue will reopen on Monday, June 18, at 6 a.m.

Detour routes will be clearly posted and Cleveland Police will be providing traffic control in the area. For westbound motorists, the detour will be north on W. 6 Street, west on St. Clair Avenue, south on W. 9 Street and then west on W. Superior Avenue to the Detroit Superior Bridge and destinations westbound. For eastbound motorists, the detour will be north on W. 9 Street, east on St. Clair Avenue, south on W. 6 Street and then east on W. Superior Avenue.

The purpose of the Superior Stones Canal CSO Improvements Project is to increase the capacity of the sewer system, thereby, reducing the amount of raw sewage discharging into the Cuyahoga River. At the completion of the project, more than 13 million gallons of raw sewage that discharges into the environment will be eliminated annually.

This project began in August of 2016 and is part of Project Clean Lake, the Sewer District’s $3 billion, 25-year program to control the amount of raw sewage discharged into area waterways, including the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie, during heavy rain. Project Clean Lake will reduce combined sewer overflow (CSO) from 4.5 billion gallons to 500 million gallons by 2036.
